Family Portraits

Once again this summer Bureau County Farm Bureau is offering Bureau County Farm Bureau members a free family portrait. Individual poses are available; however, this program is limited to one (1) FREE portrait per family or household. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult IN the free portrait. You may wish to invite parents, grandparents and children for a generation portrait.

Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise

Join the Bureau and Stark County Farm Bureaus on Wednesday, June 20 for a trip to Chicago for a Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise.
The Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise aboard Chicago's First Lady is a "must" for out-of-towners and Chicagoans alike. CAF certified volunteer tour guides-called docents-interpret more than 50 buildings along the Chicago River, revealing how the city grew from a small back-country outpost into one of the world's most important crossroads in less than 100 years.

Tractor Trek for Ag in the Classroom

The Bureau County Farm Bureau Foundation and the Henry County Farm Bureau Foundation are putting the final touches on plans for our first Tractor Trek. The Tractor Trek will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 23 &24, 2012, rain or shine!

Summer Ag Institute for Teachers

Applications are now available for this year's Summer Agricultural Institute II, targeted to pre-school to high school educators who want to expand their curriculum to include topics related to agriculture. This year's program will feature "A-MAIZE-ING Corn", where class participants will learn about the different types of corn that are grown and how to incorporate corn related lessons into their classrooms. The dates for the Bureau, Lee and Whiteside County Summer Ag Institute II are June 26-27, 2012.

Ag in the Classroom Golf Outing

June 29, 2012 - 9:00am
Bureau and Lee County Farm Bureaus will be hosting their 3rd Annual Golf Outing for supporters of Ag in the Classroom. The outing will be held on Friday, June 29th at Timber Creek in Dixon. The Tournament will be a shot-gun start, 4- person scramble. Tee time is 9 a.m. and lunch (provided by COUNTRY Financial) will be served for all teams and sponsors after the tourney. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Bureau and Lee County Ag in the Classroom program.

Farmers Market Set to Open

The taste of the summer season will come alive soon as the Bureau County Farmer's Market is expected to open for business Saturday, May 19. The Market, located at Darius-Miller Park in Princeton, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday May 19 through October. The market will also be held on Tuesdays (starting in June) at Darius Miller Park. The hours for the Tuesday evening markets will be from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 Plow Creek Farm will be setting up a few days early at the location to sell their fresh strawberries!

Farm Bureau Makes a Donation to Extension

The Bureau County Farm Bureau donated $2,571 to the Bureau County Extension Unit at the April Board meeting, thanks to generous donations received from Farm Bureau members.  Jim May, District 4 Representative (right) presented the check to Jill Guynn, Unit Director of the University of Illinois Extension Unit in Bureau County.

Teacher of the Year Finalist Announced

Vicki Litherland, K-5 Teacher for PE/Health and coach at Bureau Valley Grade School was named as a finalist for the Illinois Ag in the Classroom Teacher of the Year Award. Ms. Litherland brings ag in to the classroom every chance she gets by using references to agriculture and food pyramid as students learn how they are connected to healthy choices and lifestyles.

 

Tractor Rollover Training Held for Fire and EMT in Bureau County

Firefighters and EMTs from all over Bureau County participated in a tractor rollover rescue course Saturday, March 10th in Princeton.  This course provided an in-depth look at agricultural trauma with emphasis on injuries from tractor rollover accidents.  Stateline Farm Rescue provided classroom instruction, followed by hands-on training.  The Life Flight team from St. Francis Medical Center, in Peoria also flew a helicopter in for the day to allow further medical instruction on such injuries.  The Bureau County Farm Bureau sponsored six area firemen thanks to a grant received by Illinois Farm Bureau and COUNTRY Financial.

2012 Ag Fair Held to Celebrate National Ag Month

The Eighteenth annual 4th grade Ag Fair was held on March 15th at the Bureau County Fairgrounds. This year the Ag Fair was attended by 23 classes composed of almost 440 students and approximately 25 adults and teachers. The 23 classes were divided between morning and afternoon sessions. The students visited 14 different sessions were they had a nine minute mini lesson on agriculture.
